Preparing The Seat Blank

Once your top is glued together and you have left it to dry, remove the sash clamps and put one of them in the vise. Secure your board in the sash clamp to hold it tight. (This is what Paul calls the ‘clamp in the vise’ trick.)

Use the plane across the grain (or diagonally) until the surface is level. You may initially need quite a heavy cut for this, especially if the boards weren’t well aligned when you glued up. Repeat on the other side, and then finish off with a light cut so that you’re only taking fine shavings along the grain. Use a straightedge to check your surfaces for flat.

Note: It is important that your plane is sharp. For a complete guide on sharpening your plane, click here.
