Boring The Hole

This step is optional, but it’s good practice and the hole is especially useful for mixing up batters and such.

Use a brace and bit to bore a ¾” (19mm) hole. Stop when the snail (threaded tip) of the bit comes through the opposite face. Turn your piece around in the vice and carefully finish the hole from the other side. This will avoid the bit breaking through and splitting off the unsupported fibres on the outside face.
