Chopping The Mortise Hole
Define your extremes of the hole with a knifewall as you would on a common mortise, and chop the mortise hole down to a depth of 1” (25mm). Make sure you use your tenon piece again to mark the exact distance from the top since any gap here will be clearly seen.
