Shaping The Handle
With the bulk of the waste material removed, move on to shape the handle by using a spokeshave to take off the corners at 45°. You can set the spokeshave for a heavy cut on one end of the blade and a very light cut on the other. This will allow you to remove thick shavings first and then refine without having to adjust the depth of cut constantly.
Continue to work around each corner until you have an even oval shape. Remember to feel for the grain and change direction if necessary, as working against the grain results in torn grain and takes noticeably more effort than cutting with the grain.
