Marking Out The Recess Depth

Set a marking gauge to ¼” (or 6mm) and use it to mark between the two pencil lines on both edges. When using a marking gauge, the trick is to apply enough pressure sideways to keep flat against the side of your piece, but minimal pressure with the pins into the wood. This way, the pins will create the finest markings on the very surface of the wood without deviating.
