Cutting The Mortise Haunch
With your mortise piece clamped securely in the vise, saw down the two gauge lines to the marked depth using a tenon saw. Make sure you cut on the insides of the gauge lines, though only marginally.
Then split the waste from the end grain using a chisel. Start part way down to test how straight the grain is; if it is approximately straight, you can split from the pencil line. If it dives noticeably, you may wish to turn around and work from the mortise side, with your chisel bevel down, of course.
