Cutting The Tenons

As usual, start with the shoulders of the tenons. Use a wide chisel to create a step down on the waste side of the knifewall. Then saw down to your gauge line, making sure not to cut into your shoulder line.

You can either split the cheeks off with a chisel or saw down with a tenon saw. This can depend on the direction of the grain. On the short stub tenons, you should be able to split cut, but make sure you split away from the gauge line to test the grain. If it shoots inwards, you can pare from the side instead.

For the through tenons, try to cut marginally away from the gauge line so you can custom fit it to the appropriate hole and avoid the risk of it being too lose or showing a gap on the outside. Once the shoulder of the tenon has been cut, use the chisel to pare away the fuzzy bits.
