Setting The Sliding Bevel

If you already have a dovetail template, skip to the next lesson. If not, follow the simple method described below to set a sliding bevel to a 1:7 pitch. This is the angle we use on the sides of the tails.

(We recommend that sooner or later you make a dovetail template. It is a very practical little template for laying out dovetails. Plus, it’s a great training exercise in itself for laying out and cutting shoulders accurately.)

Mark seven increments from the edge. 70mm will work fine.

Measure one increment (10mm) to the side along the edge

Draw a line connecting the two points to establish the angle

This will give you the angle you need for the dovetail

Register your sliding bevel against the edge. Adjust the beam to match the angled line and lock the nut tight.
