General Layout

Begin by deciding on the orientation of the parts. Choose the best ends for the joint, preferably without knots or awkward grain. Then use the thickness of one to mark the shoulder on the other with a pencil. Repeat on the other piece, and only mark on the outside face. These are only temporary guidelines, showing where to stop when sawing down the tails and pins later.
