(Optional) Jointing Stock For The Lid And Base
If you can’t get boards wide enough for the lid and base, you can edge joint and glue up two narrow boards instead. You can either true up each board independently or, alternatively, clamp the two together and plane the jointing edges simultaneously, as shown in detail in our ‘Gluing Up Boards’ guide.
Once you’re happy with your edge joint, apply a thin layer of glue on one of the edges and rub together (to spread evenly) before applying clamps. Remember that the boards slip easily before the glue begins to bind so you must check and micro adjust constantly. Also take into account that the boards may cup if you apply pressure unevenly, i.e. by placing all of the clamps from the same side.
Ideally, leave the clamps on for an hour at least before progressing any further.
