Applying Finish (Optional)

Although not necessary, applying vegetable oil enhances the colour of the wood and helps to avoid it getting stained too easily. Ultimately, it will change colour depending on which foods are cut on it, as well as frequent washing and exposure to sunlight.

To finish your chopping board, use a clean cloth or tissue to coat the whole board with vegetable oil. The end grain will absorb the most so make sure to go over it thoroughly. Wipe off any excess with another tissue or kitchen roll. You can reapply periodically if you so wish.

Conclusion

This chopping board may seem like a simple project, but the skills you will develop in making it can be used for all manner of shaped objects or components in larger projects. This makes it a great training exercise – and great present for loved ones – so don’t conform to just making one; make a few so you get plenty of practice. You can also try different types of wood and experiment modifying the shape and size of the handle.
