Planing the Rim of the Box

Once the glue is set, you must clean up the top and bottom edges. The bottom edge is especially important since it will need to create a perfectly flat registration for the base of the tray.

Ensure your plane is sharp and set to a fine cut. Then feel each corner to see if any piece is noticeably protruding past the other. Place the plane over two adjacent pieces and, keeping the plane at a skew, begin to take a fine shaving. Continue working your way around until you can get a continuous shaving from all four edges. That will guarantee that you are flush.

Note: Remember to always keep the plane as square to the sides/ends as possible to prevent any sloping to the outside.

Repeat on the underside and make a mark to remember the correct orientation for gluing up.
