Gluing the Base
Make sure you have clamps ready before gluing up. Run a bead of glue along the box rim, spreading it into a thin layer, before placing the box sides onto the base. Apply a bit of hand pressure on the box for a few seconds to allow any excess glue to spread out and the two surfaces begin to grab.
After a few seconds, place one end in the vise to keep the two parts together as you begin to apply clamps to the other end. You may need to use several clamps to close up all gaps, but first check that there was no slippage, as you still have time to make the necessary corrections. If you do not have enough clamps, you can leave the box in the vise for an hour or two with a few clamps on the other end.
Note: To avoid bruising the rim of the box, use packers which will distribute the force from the clamps over a larger surface.
