Shaping the Base - Half-Round Profiles

Starting with the ends (because they are end-grain), round over the ends with a plane according to our comprehensive roundover technique guide.

Remember to skew your plane when working on end-grain, otherwise the cut will not be as clean and you will inevitably create a lot of breakout with every stroke of the plane. Also, try to achieve a consistent, uniform roundover on every edge by exercising careful observation and not letting yourself get carried away and taking too much off.

Note: The base does not have a complete roundover, as shown on the guide, but a half-round on the top face of the base. This is only a design feature, but you are welcome to make a complete roundover if you prefer.
